In cryogenic conditions or temperatures exceeding 572°F
(300°C), using 17-4 PH alloy is not advisable. This alloy can be
subjected to age-hardening heat treatments for optimal mechanical properties. The
highest level of strength is achieved through a heat treatment at temperatures of 900°F
(482°C) or higher.
In most situations, the corrosion resistance of 17-4PH alloy plates
is similar to that of 304
stainless steel and generally better than that of 400 series
stainless steel. It is employed when a combination of moderate corrosion resistance and
exceptionally high strength is required. Standard fabrication techniques in metalworking
shops can be easily used to weld and process 17-4PH plates. Additionally, it exhibits
magnetic properties.
