The stainless steel grade 314 is among the chromium-nickel steels with exceptional resistance to high temperatures. When Stainless Steel 314 needs to be heat treated, it can be done so by annealing the metal at 1038–1149°C (1900–2100°F), followed by a quick cooling process in water or the air. Only cold working can be used to harden grade 314 steel. Coolant and high-speed turning tools are advised for grade 314 machinability. Type 314 machines produce rough, stringy chips similarly to other 18/8 types.
The best machinability is achieved at maximum feeds and low speeds. Bars can have their surface polish improved after machining with a little bit of cold work. This grade is utilized in situations where its exceptional high-temperature scaling resistance and creep strength are advantageous. For furnace parts, it is frequently utilized.
