A typical material for the chemical industry as well as the automobile engine, aero engine, and airframe sectors, Inconel 600 is a mix of Nickel Chromium and Iron. In order to reduce the risk of stress corrosion cracking caused by high-purity water containing chloride ions, controlled chemical composition limitations are used in the nuclear industry.
As a non-magnetic alloy, Alloy 600 has excellent mechanical properties, is strong and workable, and can be welded easily. Chrome-nickel stainless steels are often formulated using Inconel Alloy 600 because of their cold-forming properties. As well as resistance to nitrogen and airborne carburizing gases, the alloy also withstands ammonia-bearing environments. Components including control rod inlet stub tubes, reactor containment parts, seals, steaming dryers, and d separators in hot water boilers are used in nuclear reactors.
