When compared to Grade 310 and high nickel alloys, 253MA
has an advantage in reducing sulfide atmospheres due to its relatively low
nickel concentration. The steel exhibits great resistance to sigma phase
precipitation and strong oxide stability due to the incorporation of
substantial amounts of silicon, nitrogen, and cerium. Even at cryogenic
temperatures, this grade has excellent toughness thanks to its austenitic
structure. The high chromium and nitrogen components give the grade a
pitting resistance that is similar to that of 316, even though it was not
intended for aqueous corrosion resistance.

253MA Bars do, however,
have a high carbon content and are therefore especially vulnerable to repeated exposure
from welding or service exposure. The alloy has useful performance in minimizing sulfide
in surroundings and has moderate strength. good resistance to hydrocarbon gases in an
oxidizing environment, even with minute amounts of oxygen. Gases that reduce stop the
protective oxide from forming. Considering 253MA has high strength at high temperatures,
it is frequently utilized for pressure-containing and structural applications at
temperatures above and above 500°C and up to 900°C.
Compared to alternatives like Grade 310, it is stronger at these
temperatures. In the temperature range of 425-860°C, 253MA will become sensitized. This
is not an issue for applications requiring high, but it will decrease aqueous corrosion
resistance. SS 253 MA bars are used in various applications like Burners, Boiler
Nozzles, Petrochemical and refinery tube hangers, Heat exchangers, Expansion below,
Stack dampers.
