The high molybdenum content in Type 317 provides excellent corrosion resistance and remarkable pitting resistance as a result of its austenitic chrome-nickel composition. Among the 300 series alloys, it has the best corrosion resistance and the strongest tensile and creeps strength properties at high temperatures. A low-carbon austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel Type 317L may be used when maximum corrosion resistance is needed and annealing is not practicable after welding.
The material shows good oxidation resistance up to 1600°F intermittently and 1700°F continuously. Shearing, stamping, heading, and drawing are effective methods for producing this alloy. It is advised to anneal the component after work to reduce internal tensions.
