The duplex stainless steel Duplex 2205 with nitrogen enhancement was developed to overcome corrosion issues associated with 300 series stainless steel. In the family of stainless steels called "duplex," stainless steels fall between austenitic steels 304 and ferritic steels 430. Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 should be used only in temperatures below 20°C. Exposure to high temperatures for an extended period can corrode 2205 stainless.
Chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen work together to give SAF 2205 a good resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. Various food processing services, brackish water processes, bleaching processes, closed-loop water systems, and other applications require this type of resistance.
