The basic material for Stainless Steel 321 is austenitic 18/8 steel (Grade 304). By adding titanium, it is stabilized. The reason SS 321 is utilized is that, following heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425-850°C, they are not subject to intergranular corrosion. As a result of its high strength, resistance to scaling, phase instability, and subsequent resistance to aqueous corrosion, stainless steel 321 is the preferred grade for applications in the range of temperatures up to about 900°C.
SS 321H is a modified form of SS 321 that contains a higher amount of carbon for improved strength at high temperatures. Heat exchangers, expansion joints, bellows, furnace components, heating element tubing, high-temperature screens, and spiral welded tube for burner pipes and flues are all constructed from grade SS321/ 321H.
