It is common practice to use austenitic chromium-nickel Stainless Steel 309 and 309S for applications requiring higher temperatures. Alloys 309 and 309S feature high levels of chromium and nickel, which make them extremely corrosion- and oxidation-resistant, heat- and oxidation-resistant, and excellent heat-resistant materials that provide strong strength at both low and high temperatures.
Carbon content is the only distinction between 309 and 309S. Weldability and carbide precipitation are improved by Alloy 309S's significantly lower carbon content. This alloy can be machined in the same way as type 304 stainless steel. Despite having stringy chips, this alloy becomes work-hardened quickly. Chip breakers and maintaining the cutting tool are essential.
