Standard 18/8 (18% chrome, 8% nickel) austenitic stainless steel is Grade 304 Stainless Steel. It is an alloy that is not magnetic when it is annealed, but it acquires magnetic properties when it is cold-worked. Of all the stainless grades, it is the one that is most frequently used. The Stainless Steel Grade 304L is resistant to oxidation up to a sustained temperature of 1650°F (899°C) without significant scaling.
1500°F (816°C) is the upper limit for intermittent presentation. Except for applications requiring stress relief, 304L, an additional low-carbon variation of 304, can frequently be used in the "as-welded" condition (without annealing), even in very corrosive environments. The increased carbon content of Stainless Steel 304H makes the material more appropriate for use in areas where high temperatures are accessible. This grade's austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloy composition and higher carbon content contribute to improved tensile and yield strength.
