To account for the cessation of carbide precipitation and consequent intergranular corrosion, Alloy 347 is a balanced, austenitic, chromium steel that contains columbium. Alloy 347 is stronger than alloys 304 and 304L in terms of creep and stress rupture properties, ensuring it can be used in applications that are at risk for sensitization and corrosion. By adding chromium and tantalum, alloy 347 is balanced out, which is balanced out these additions. Columbium expansion also enables Alloy 347 to have exceptional corrosion resistance, superior to Alloy 321. A version of alloy 347 with a greater carbon content is called alloy 347H, displaying enhanced creep resistance and high-temperature performance.
The general corrosion resistance of alloy 347/347H stainless steel is good and comparable to that of 304. As imbalanced alloys like 304 are vulnerable to intergranular assault, it was created for use in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
